4th. November 1994 , Prague's new shopping centre, the Vinohradský Pavilon, opened its gates to its first visitors.

New, yet at the same time historical. Because although the interior has been completely changed, the Pavilon could not overlook its original name - Vinohradská tržnice (Vinohrady market hall). One of the three surviving historic market halls in the capital (the others are in the Old Town and Smíchov), it dates back to 1902 and was built according to a design by Antonín Turek, who was the chief town engineer of Royal Vinohrady from 1899 onwards. The same architect also designed Národní Dům on Náměstí Míru (1893 - 94) and building No. 660 on Náměstí Republiky in the city centre, built in 1903-4 for the Commercial and Trade Chamber. From this account alone it can be seen that at the time when it was built the market hall was considered a significant building which should be entrusted to a reputable designer.
