In 1997, the project came into existence in Prague when a few parents responded to Mrs. Ernyei´s offer to teach their children Judaism.
From now on she started giving lessons to three children once at the place of the Prague Jewish Community centre. After a year, the number of children tripled and the class crystallized into an independent after-school Jewish program, that is how the present name Bejt Elend - Private Afternoon School was established. The peculiar word "Elend" refers to the name "Ernyei", which dates back to Samuel Elend, who in 1905 lived in Slovakia - in Yiddish it means "misery and mess", an explanation preferred by most of the children. The school was gradually spreading out and in the year 2002, Bejt Elend school engaged 8 professional lecturers and nearly 60 children. The youngest pupil is four years old and the oldest is fifteen years old. The curriculum of so called Tower of Babel implies Hebrew and English language, Jewish traditions, Arts & craft. Our latest projects in preparation are MOADON, a club for teenagers and Bar / Bat mitzvah preparatory classes. (Both has been opened already this school year to be able to discover detailed specific needs that usually came out while practicing.) We organize outings to the Czech countryside throughout the school year besides our regular daily classes. We also take part in preparations of the international summer camp in Szarvas, Hungary every year.
