"Desperately disappointing Dilli Delhi"

I can think of two reasons why restaurants

offer a cut price deal on Slevomat.
The first is to fill their restaurant on days

when it’s normally slow, so that they can

cover the fixed costs of their overheads and

make a small profit.
The second is to tempt people to try their

restaurant and impress them with the quality

of their grub so much that they would become

repeat customers.
Dilli Delhi are obviously pursuing the former

strategy.
So let's start with the ambience. It’s a dimly

lit (which is OK) sparse cellar with a couple

of token Indian embroideries tacked onto the

wall to remind the forgetful amongst us that

it's meant to be an Indian restaurant.

Sometimes the lack of decor to create any

atmosphere is a sign that the focus is on the

food, but as we were to find out then this was

not the case.
Our expectations were middling, but we had

faith after reading the reviews here (three of

which were written by one person) that the

food would be good if not great. We were

impressed by the starters which were mostly

well cooked, tasty, not greasy and served

quickly. There was an exception which was some

sort of deep fried cauliflower which was a

tasteless mouthful of sludge.
The waitress was charming and helpful and this

boded well for what was to come.
The main courses.
After what seemed like an eternity, these were

served by a different waiter who had a tiny

head so I'll just refer to him as TH from now

on.
The Naan bread was good.
The tandoori chicken was good.
The rice (which TH forgot until I asked for it

by name) was good.
The rest of it was an abomination.
The chilli chicken dish was tiny amounts of

chicken floating on what I can only describe

as Bisto gravy with some chilli powder thrown

in since there were no visible green chillis

as there should have been. Capiscum (Green

Bell peppers) were there, but no onions.
The vegetable madras dish did actually have a

decent sauce but the peas and beans and

whatever other veg was in it seemed like they

had recently been taken straight out of the

freezer, so not much taste apart from the

sauce.
My friend (who like me cooks Indian food

regularly and can drone on about the origins

and ingredients of a genuine Goan Vindaloo for

about an hour and 22 minutes) does actually

know what he's on about, and he gave TH the

full volley of constructive criticism after we

had finished our mains. I think TH's response

could fairly be described as some sort of

passive agreement.
It also seemed to fly over TH's head when we

asked for the bill before we were subjected to

the dessert, but since TH was automatically

programmed to bring us the set desserts then

that's what we got.
I know that on a deal like this then you might

not get the finest food that they have to

offer, but at least they should make some kind

of effort to tempt you back to try the a la

carte menu...
I bought two vouchers, so in this case I'd

rather just chuck my second printed voucher

into a saucepan full of gravy, add some cheap

paprika, half a bell pepper, stir well and try

and flog it to some unsuspecting victim as

Papir Madras, which sounds vaguely Indian.
At least that might cover my fixed costs.

Beers and a curry go together like hand in glove so when a good friend of mine suggested we use his Slevomat voucher for a meal during our weekly get togthers I was a happy chap. A few weeks ago we visited The Pind and had a good meal so I thought Dilli Delli must be at least vaguely comparable as they are in the most direct competion possible with the 2 Restaurants on the same street. We walked though the door and were greated by a familiar aroma of Indian spices and proceded down to the basement. Being a massive fan of Indian food my mouth started to water.

First impressions: The décor leaves a lot to be desired. From the exposed air con vents, the badly painted and plasted walls to the insultingly cliched orniments I saw that it could not compare with the atmosphere of The Pind or Masala. It seemed they had popped down to the local everything for 39Kc store, bought anything that looked vaguely exotic and stuck it on the walls with little consideration to the effect it would have. Atmosphere isnt everything, I have had many a decent vindaloo from Manni Kabashi and that place has all of the ambiance of a fast food joint (it is actually a fast food joint) so I was not put off too much.

Food wise, things started well. We didn't have long to wait to be served a mango and pinapple lassi which I thought tasted a bit plasticy but otherwise fine. The mixed starter plate was, well a mixture of quality. We had a total of 8 items on the plate, 2 of each of the 4 different dishes but each were no larger than a single bite. The onion bhaji was decent, crisp and not greasy, the samosa was good with the outside crisp and the vegetables inside nice and soft and the chicken pakora was also OK but the batter was a little mushy. The only big letdown was the vegi pakora which was a undercooked piece of cauliflower in the same mushy batter. The starter was served with a pretty good, although tiny, bowl of raita and a tiny mixed salad.

After we each had sampled one of each starter we choose our main course options. We decided to get the chilli chicken, which we ordered extra hot, and the vegetable madras. I would like to point out that it was a Thursday night and the restaurant was, at most, 1/4 full and being a set menu we thought the dishes would be served fairly quickly. We waited 20-25 mins for the main course to be served and the waiter initially forget to serve our rice. Our main course consisted of the 2 choices mentioned above, a chicken tikka dish, a naan bread and a plate of pickles and raita.

The fixed dish of murg tikka was pretty good albeit tiny. 5 small pieces of chicken breast in a tikka marinade that when combined with the raita made for a tasty couple of bites. The other main courses didnt fair anywhere near as well. Our vegitarian selection, the "vegetable madras", while certainly containing vegetables, was definitely not a madras. The sauce, although not that bad, was re-purposed korma obviously from the 2nd meat choice of chicken korma. The vegetables where a mixture of peas, green beans, carrots which were cold and watery in the middle and bearing a very close resemblace to cheapo frozen tesco value veggies.

The "Chilli Chicken" was maybe the worst offender of the evening. The dish should be full of juicy chicken pieces with fresh chillies in a rich hot and spicy sauce. The reality was however very different, we were served a water thin sauce that tasted like it was made from beef stock cubes with a few tiny bits of chicken. The dish replaced the medium hot green chilli peppers with hard and alost uncooked chunks of green bell peppers and onions. The straw that broke the camels back was the fact it was totally without any spicey flavour even though we ordered it extra hot. Awful.

After the major disappointment of the main course we decided to get the bill and skip desert. The desert was served anyway which we didnt bother to try. As we were about to leave I thought I had to tell the waiter that we thought the meal was really bad. This is not the first time I have done this and usually the waiter would at acknowledge that the meal was not as good as it should have been and offer some kind of apology or at least give hope that this level of service and food was the exception rather than the rule. At the very least I would expect a offer of cooking the dish to my liking the next time I come to the restaurant. Instead the waiter did not even offer a reply and seemed totally indifferent to the complaint suggesting to me that it was not the first time he has heard it and most certainly wont be the last.

I do not expect 100% perfection every time I go to a restaurant but I do expect at least acknowledgement when a problem clearly exists. Like a time I visited Khajuraho for a, admitidly very cheap, all you can eat deal and the menu did not match that which was advertised on the website. I was offered the missing dish from the a-la-carte menu. Or a time in Masala where staffing shortages caused very long waits and subpar food but was not expected to pay for the food that did not meet the usaul very high standard. Both of these examples were part of a voucher deal and both were handled in a way that resulted in me going back many times and without further complaint.

Prague has many better places to go for Indian cuisine. If you want decent cheap food with friendly service and dont mind a school cafateria atmosphere go to Manni Kebabish. If you want mid-priced good food, great atmosphere and great attentive service go to The Pind. If you want great atmosphere, more expensive amazing food and below average service go to Masala Pod Karlovem. If you want awful atmosphere, awful service and bad food go to Deli Delli. I think the choice for every occasion is covered elsewhere than Dili Delli.

In closing, please bear in mind this review has been writen by someone that did not pay for the meal but was rather treated by a fiend. If I had been the person who had payed for this subpar food, food that can be had much cheaper and of much higher quality elsewhere, I would have been more scathing. I am a optimistic cynic which is why I gave Dilli Delhi a 3/10 score and not a knee-jerk "worst restaunt eva" 1/10. As bad as it was I think there can always be worse and likewise I would never rate a restaurant more than 8/10 as improvement can always be made.

With friends decided to try Dilli Delhi last week as we live in Vinohrady area. Nothing particularly striking from outside but food was delicious and service is good. Portions were much better than usual and made sharing fun. Will be back!

Hi,
I live 2 blocks from this place, so I decided to try it and went there today around 8 p.m. The restaurant was empty (never a good sign, but as it's Monday, so I gave them the benefit of doubt...) I ordered a Vindaloo curry takeaway. At home, I was very surprised at the very small quantity of meat, there were exactly 5 tiny pieces of chicken and 5 slightly larger pieces of potatoes. What a ripoff at 180 CZK!! I wiill never order again from this place.

Dilli Delhi Response:

If what you stated below is true then it is indeed a rip off. We have large number of loyal happy customers specially for Vindallo curry take away and always come back with a smiling satisfied face for repete orders. Surprisingly this is first time we hear any unhappy statement(either about quality or quantity). Please come back to the restaurant with your purchase bill for the curry , we will either refund you the money or serve you our yummy mouth-watering curry which you will find 125 Gms of Meet. Please be informed that it is our strict policy to serve 125gms of meet per curry(for just 180 KC, most competetive prize in town). we are taking this incident very seriously to check if anything went wrong. Thanks for the post here and Looking forward to see you soon.

I recently ordered a takewawy from this place using a discount voucher my partner got on Slevomat. I'm not sure if the food was 'tailored' becasue of that, but whatever the reason, it was pretty poor. The korma was basically a watered down youghurt sauce with barely a hint of coconut. The jalfrezi was better, but had tiny pieces of meat, surely less than advertised. The rice was ok and the poppodums were those shop bought small bitter ones. More positively the peshwari naan bread was good and up there with the average.

The place itself is pretty dingy and dark. There were a few tables scattered around but i'm glad i hadn't made the effort to eat in.

Overall a dissappointing experience and not somewhere i'll be going back to. There are so many Indian places in Prague now that the days of being able to get away with serving this sort of below par food are gone. There are far superior places out there such as Tandoor and Curry House.

I 'treated' my boyfriend to a meal from Dilli Delhi using a slevomat voucher. What a disappointment. Their mixed starter looked like kentucky fried chicken and the poppadoms were a bit soft. Also no raita or onion was served, we had to order spicy sauce which was more like soup. Onto the main-mine was passable lamb r.j but no vegetables in it and very salty and quite a brown colour. My boyfriend had the tandoori chicken, which to my horror was 2 dry looking chicken legs and a boned thigh,it didnt taste very good either!! I have never seen boned chicken on a tandoor plate with no onions and hot lettuce, it was-weird. Then the peshwari nan! My goodness, it was flourescent orange and tasted like a cake. The only redeeming part of the meal was that the butter nan was soft and the kasmiri rice was good, although it did have a lot of raisins in it, which I had to pick out. No atmosphere, Avoid! Avoid! It's like someone wanted to make an indian meal and didnt have the right ingredients and just threw a whole lot of stuff together and hoped you didn't notice!

Dilli Delhi Response:

We are truly concerned about the review that you have written. Dilli Delhi completed our one year and the restaurant is doing well with creating more and more loyal guests. We will never be able to please everyone, but we can assure you that we will aim to constantly improve and offer quality proper Indian food to our visitors are used to. Although we believe the remarks about our food to be incorrect and untrue, we wish you the very best in the future. And Please check our clarifications for the point you wrote.

We don't serve raita or onions with our starter and papadam. We give only mint souse along with papadams. we charge 10Kc for one papadam which you can find one of the cheapest if you compare with any other Indian Restaurants in Pague. If some one need Raita, they can order it from our menu. And for your kind information, In Rogan josh normaly doesn't use Vegetables. Tandoori chicken always go with bones. If you need boneless then it should be Murg Tikka. And Peshwari nan is always sweet. So I think there was a confusion with the orders you made.

Being a born-&-raised in the Indian subcontinent, I do not need any prefaces for Indian food.

Cheap to pricy, bland to spicy, I have tried all Indian restaurants in Prague. Despite being the newest born in the family, Dilli Delhi stands tall serving the patronage with zest & authenticity.

That's why it is a My Kind Of Place apart from being the personal favorite.

If you are on the lookout for a scrumptious Indian bona fide dining experience, go to U vodárny 10, Praha 3.

I have been in Dili deli last week with friends. Actually we came for coctails and shisha's coz we know barmen from Bombay bar who owns the place. While trying our coctails, we diceded to try some dishes from Tandoor as we were informed that there kitchen open till 12 midnight on weekends. It was realy tasty to try there dilli delhi platter (Grilled Meats, Fish and Chicken). As myself i prefer non spicy food, i was trying shahi paneer with garlic naan which was worth to try.

Exellent food, good service, but.... should be better, if they improve there interier

Let me start just by saying that for me is not very easy to try new things but from time to time somebody finally convinces me but is very difficult to enjoy it - I normally eat beef steak with fries in Chinese restaurants  , went once to a Libanese restaurant (not in Prague) for company dinner and needed to run to MacDonalds after  and I tried Indian food before in other Indian restaurants in Prague but I really didn't like anything.

Meanwhile I've been to Dilli-Delhi couple of times and I've been well impressed. ;)
One of the times I was not very hungry so I tried Chicken Pakora as a started and I really enjoyed it. For the other times, I always take naan and Aloo Kulcha as side dish (nice bread, first one similar to focaccia and second one even better, with potatos).
As main dishes I tried Murg Tikka (my favorite), Chicken Korma and my wife loves Shahi Paneer, Vegetable Biryani and Dal Makhani.
I normally drink simple beer or coke but my wife is crazy for Mango Lassi and also ginger tea.
For me the best is that you can simple say what you like and what you dont and you always get a recommendation - the same if you like more or less spicy - just need to ask!

In terms of location is perfect, as its right outside Jiriho Z Podebrad metro and tram station.
Inside is quite nice, with a simple decoration with Indian motives and every time I go there I notice that they always add something new.

In the end, perfect place for the ones that like to try new things (and for the ones that dont :))

I was looking for a place to organize my son's birthday party and I heard about Dilli Delhi from one of my friends who organized a party there. I visited the place with my wife and the restaurant looked very nice and ideal for a big party. We had our lunch also from there to test the food and the food was simply the best we ever had in Prag over the past 5 years of our stay in Prague (we had chilli chicken and butter naan). We will have our son's B'day party soon there and we are looking forward.

My husband and I ordered a take-away from here - never again! The seekh kebab was dry, questionable whether it was lamb and looked as if it was cooked days ago. The chicken biryani was just passable but no raitu to accompany it. Big disappointment! I´ll stick with Mailsi and Masala.
