"mailsi - good but a bit expensive"

We liked this place quite a lot. The atmosphere was a little kitschy, but somehow culturally appropriate. And there were nice details (placemats, folded napkins with two sets of silver set in them). Our server, who was also the owner, took excellent care of us (hung up our coats, fetched them as we left, made sure everything was good, etc). The food was excellent - we particularly enjoyed the appetizers. The rice had these crazy neon colored grains in it. The quality of the wine I got (Austrialian cab-shiraz, 80 Kc/glass) was also way beyond what you normally get at czech places. I didn't mind paying 80 Kc for it. The price overall? Well, we found it a bit high. But we'd go back for a special occasion, if only to be pampered by the staff.

Note: there's a pakistani/Indian supply store next door with all sorts of goodies for cooking your own food as well, and the staff speaks English and is very helpful.

Great food, friendly service, reasonable prices. My favorite restaurant in Prague.
"Empty on Saturday night"

We went out of our way to get to Mailsa Pakistani Restaurant, tucked away in a terribly inconvenient corner of Zizkov, because we really wanted Pakistani food. It was something we enjoyed during our 3 years in Dubai and we hoped it would be great.

When we arrived at 7:30 on a Saturday night, we were shocked to find that it was empty. Not a single customer. This place had come highly recommended by a friend, so I thought we should at least have one meal there.

What we liked:
The food was really nice. It was probably the best palaak paneer I've had in Prague. The chicken jalfrazi was also delicious. All the food was served hot and fresh. I looked in the kitchen on my way to the ultra-clean loo and saw a woman cooking in traditional Pakistani clothing, which is a very good sign. We have no complaints about the food at all.

What we didn't like:
This "Pakistani" restaurant has mainly Indian dishes on the menu. If we want Indian food, we can get it cheaper and more conveniently in our own neighborhood.

The main courses do not come with rice, which means an extra 50 Kc per person. It doesn't sound like a lot, but the main courses are already more expensive than those at similar restaurants in Prague - and those include rice - so it is poor value for the money.

The service seemed good at first, and we were impressed when the waiter came by to ask us how we liked the meal (I guess we've been in Prague too long if we were impressed by that!), but at the end it just fell apart. We asked for the leftovers to be boxed up (not that there was a huge amount of food - I just have a tiny appetite) and to get the cheque. We sat there for over 10 minutes just waiting (remember, we were the only customers). Finally we said, "Well if they're not going to bring us the cheque, we'll just stand up and head for the door. That will hurry them up." It turns out THEY were waiting for US to go to the counter to pay! At prices like that, and considering that we were the ONLY ones in the restaurant at 8:00 on a Saturday night, you'd think they could at least bring the cheque and the doggie bag to the table!

We had one chicken jalfrazi, one palaak paneer, one rice, one naan and one Coke. The total came to a whopping 625 Kc! And this is in Zizkov, not some touristy place on Wenceslas Square! To top it off, they do not accept credit cards.

It's no wonder there was no one else there. The food was good, but way overpriced, the service was just bizarre and the menu has too much of a focus on Indian food, rather than Pakistani food.

i have been a regular customer for approx 5 years, as this is the other side of town from me i go about 2 or 3 times a year. i have yet to be dissapointed. the service is always efficient and freindly.
iam sucker for a good chicken vindaloo and in my opinion they do the best vindaloo in Prague. My wife is more open to being adventurous and she has tried several dishes on the menu and always enjoyed them. The sundries i.e poppadoms, Naans and chapatis and rice are of high quality and cooked well.
this place is not cheap but i dont consider the prices to be outrageous compared to other indian and pakistani restaurants and having tried most of the other i believe the quality of the product here justifies me returning again and again.

This restaurant was fairly enjoyable. The service was ok and the food was quite alright. What this place really has got going for it is the atmosphere. You can see that it is a family-run establishment and we felt quite welcome. Unfortunately the food does not live up to the same standards, I had a chicken dish (unfortunately I forgot the name of it), which was nothing really out of the ordinary. What's more, it was supposed to be spicy and it wasn't at all. On the other hand, my friend had the beef curry, which was NOT supposed to be spicy but indeed was. So go figure. Her dish was even worse than mine and looked and tasted like wet minced meat. But both dishes together were quite ok... Although the staff looked at us like we were some kind of freaks (chicken and beef? Together?? - either that or I'm just paranoid). To go with our dishes we had chapatis and rice. The chapatis tasted like nothing, which is why I disliked them and why my friend liked them. So I don't know. The rice was rice, with colors.
For dessert we had Kulfi, some variety of ice cream. It came in both mango and pistachio flavor, we tried them both and they were really quite lovely.

All in all, a disappointing meal considering the price (over 700 for the above mentioned + 2 beers). You'll probably get better value for your money at some Indian place, the food seems to be the same anyway.
