The plan for construction of today’s Dejvice was developed from 1924–29 according to a design by the architect Antonín Engel. It was to be a new, modern quarter – home to important buildings for the Ministry of Defence and the Czech Technical University in Prague. The monumental Vítězné náměstí (Victory Square), nicknamed the “Kulaťák”, was erected on the site of a former army firing range in grounds to the north of the castle. Major arterial streets converge upon the square, which naturally
forms the centre of Dejvice and the whole of Prague 6.

The construction of the project was never fully realised, and to this day the top of the horseshoe-shaped square still awaits completion. This does not prevent, however, the “Kulaťák” from being the liveliest place to meet in the whole district. The atmosphere is shaped by the spectacular neo-classical buildings, emanating from the Wagnerian tradition of the Viennese Academy, where the architect Engel received his education.

Whether or not our customers are diplomats from the neighbouring embassies, soldiers, civil servants or students at the technical university, the “Kulaťák” is forever interwoven with all their lives.
