The Týn School was one of the oldest latin parish schools in the country (founded in the 13th century). The main goal of the school was to educate and raise children of Prague merchants and to prepare students for entering the Charles University. The school educational programme included students´ participation in the Church liturgy, particularly by singing. The Týn School had a high level of attainment: some of its teachers were after the foundation of the Charles University allowed to take over posts at the Department of Liberal Arts. The connection with the University survived and was further maintained even during the foundation of special city high schools, when several rectors of the Charles University taught at the Týn School.
