Upper School EAL Teacher (part-time)

A. General Qualifications (preferred)

1) A high level of intra- and inter-personal intelligence

2) Minimum 3 years’ EAL experience at the middle or secondary level

3) A BA in applied linguistics/TESOL

4) Experience working collaboratively with academic subject-area teachers

B. Job Description

General Description

Facilitate academic English language learning for secondary level EAL students

(beginner to high-intermediate levels), with an emphasis on the language of science.

 

Specific Description

1. Observe secondary science courses regularly to gain fundamental knowledge

of course content.

2. Observe and directly support EAL students in Science courses.

3. Meet regularly with mainstream subject-area teachers to discuss class goals,

objectives, materials, activities, assessments, and EAL students’ needs and

relevant support.

4. Develop and modify course materials to support the learning of content and

skills for EAL students, with a focus on linguistic needs.

5. Provide mainstream course instructors with direct assistance in modifying and

supporting various course activities, including reading and writing assignments,

adjusting assessment mechanisms; planning or adapting lessons as needed in

order to meet EAL students’ needs.

6. Teaching in collaboration with Science teachers where appropriate, and with

EAL colleagues in dedicated ‘pull out’ classes.

o ISP’s EAL program is based on the gradual, supported immersion model

o The successful candidate will join a team of Upper School EAL Specialists.

o The position is 50% Full Time Equivalent, and begins in August 2012.

o Priority will be given to candidates with residency/work permit.
