Fringe Festival Prague 2010
Human Jukebox
Created and Performed by Gail Whitmore
Venue: Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele Na Prádle
Dates: Thursday June 3, Friday June 4 and Saturday June 5
Time: 19:00 - 20:00
Language: English / Český
After studying opera in her native New York City for over 15 years Gail decided to create her own show. Yet to be decided if it's a blessing or a curse, Gail's photographic memory enables her to remember almost everything she reads and hears. She went on to compile a book of around 2,000 songs in many different genres from which the audience may select anything they wish. A person simply has to call out what they'd like to hear and Gail performs it without accompaniment and from memory.
This hilariously bizarre spectacle truly offers something for everyone. If you want legitimate singing it's there. If want to watch her throw down rap lyrics in an evening gown she'll do that too!
“The Human Jukebox is probably one of the most impressive shows I've seen in quite a long time. Gail Whitmore sang about 60 songs with no accompaniment, no help and no lyrics. My favorite part was the medley where she sang 10 - 15 second clips of 40 different songs all in a row. It was amazing!” SPIN International
“Besides 'The Human Jukebox', Gail Whitmore could be called 'The Human Chameleon'. Changing while you watch and, of course listen, she'll go from Mozart to Meat Loaf, Puccini to Prince (or to The Presidents of the United States of America), to Schumann to Salt-N-Pepa in a heartbeat - wherever her audience asks her to go. Whether it's opera, jazzy standards, rock (from classic to crazy) or even rap, Gail can belt out a song or intone one in dulcet sounds that shimmer over the audience. Her knowledge of music and languages; her gorgeous, versatile mezzo-soprano voice; her emotive range and interpretative skills as well as her obvious joy in performing; her charm and inventiveness; her willingness to take risks; her sense of humor, and even her creamy redheaded beauty make 'The Human Jukebox' something not to be missed. And the 'medley' by which she ends her show--singing a line or two of a song, then switching to another then another, sometimes in a wildly different style, with barely a breath in between, led solely by audience requests on index cards she hasn't seen before--will make you laugh 'til you cry. Go, go, go see Gail Whitmore's 'Human Jukebox'!” Peggy Brown, editor/writer, New York Newsday
