Monsters vs. Aliens screens in a 3-D Czech-dubbed version; also: don't miss Febio Fest...

Written by: Written by Jason Pirodsky

This week´s big release, Dreamworks Animation´s Monsters vs. Aliens (showtimes | IMDb), seems to be screening only in a Czech-dubbed version in Prague cinemas. The film, about a ragtag group of monsters forced into action during an alien attack, is the first big worldwide release to showcase the ‘new´ digital 3-D technology (last year´s Journey to the Center of the Earth screened in 3-D at select US cinemas, but mostly in 2-D throughout the rest of the world.)

Monsters vs. Aliens is screening in its preferred 3-D format in about a third of the cinemas it´s playing at in the Czech Republic. Stateside, the film was scheduled to screen only in 3-D, but only about half of the cinemas in the US were able to equip themselves with the new technology; the economic crisis has been blamed. Hailed as the next big thing in cinema, with dozens of major 3-D films in the pipeline, the tech makes use of dual projectors and improved 3-D glasses (as opposed to the old anaglyph cardboard red/cyan glasses). It´s the same process that has been employed for amusement park shows (like Disney´s Terminator 3-D) for the past twenty years or so.

Most major animated features screen with an English-language, Czech-subtitled print or two around Prague, but Monsters vs. Aliens is screening only in Czech. While it would´ve been nice to see it in English, I´m not sure how well subtitles would work on a 3-D feature.

This week´s other big release is the Czech thriller Normal (showtimes | IMDb), which is based on the true story of German serial killer Peter Kürten, ‘The Vampire of Düsseldorf´. It´s screening in Czech, but you can catch it with English subtitles at Palace Cinemas Slovanský dům.

Elsewhere in the Prague cinema scene, you can catch master animator Jiří Barta's first feature-length film, Na půdě aneb Kdo má dneska narozeniny? (in English, that's In the Attic, or: Who Has a Birthday Today?) with English subtitles at Kino Světozor.

And: don´t miss this year´s Febio Fest, Prague´s largest film festival, which takes place from March 26 till April 4 at (mostly) Village Cinemas Anděl. Most of the foreign films will be screening with English subtitles. You can see my tips and picks for the fest HERE.

Lastly: Mark Herman´s devastating The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was scheduled for release this week (the distributor is Falcon) but only seems to be playing as part of Febio Fest. It´s a haunting film I highly recommend.
