Forgotten

Last evening, in the chilly but lovely interior of Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele na Prádle I witnessed one of the most evocative solo performances of my life, which, contrary to its name, will never be forgotten. Pat Kinevane held the audience rapt for 80 minutes in this only his second performance of the Fringe.

Forgotten is the four-sided tale of the elderly; forgotten by society, ignored by family and predeceased by friends and lovers. Their stories intertwine as elegantly as Kinevane’s kabuki-inspired movements as he flits from one engaging character to the next. The recorded voice of Gustus – Flor, Dora and Eucharia were all voiced by Kinevane live – was washed out despite the lovely acoustics of this tiny church, which seems to have been designed for the show so easily did Kinevane fill the space. Beautiful, emotional, engaging and perfectly nuanced characters make this my pick of the Fringe.

I would love to see it again at its final performance on Saturday but that would result in one less person enthralled by Kinevane’s sublime writing and consummate performance. Fishamble and Kinevane are rightfully heralded by the world of theatre.
